If the name Hiromu Arakawa means anything to you, Daemons of the Shadow Realm anime 2026 was already on your radar. The creator of Fullmetal Alchemist has a new manga — and it’s now getting the anime treatment from BONES Film, the same studio that produced FMA: Brotherhood. That combination alone made this one of the most anticipated new series of the year.

ToggleWhat Is Daemons of the Shadow Realm?
The Japanese title is Yomi no Tsugai (黄泉のツガイ). Arakawa’s manga began serialization in Monthly Shonen Gangan in December 2021 and is still ongoing. Like Fullmetal Alchemist, it’s a dark fantasy centered on siblings dealing with supernatural powers they didn’t choose.
The story follows twin siblings Yuru and Asa, who grew up in a small mountain village where Yuru hunted wild game and the two led a quiet life together. That peace is broken when a dragon’s roar tears across the sky — an event that uproots everything and separates the twins, setting them on different paths through a world they didn’t know existed.
In this world, certain humans can bond with and command supernatural beings called Daemons. Yuru and Asa are the “children who sunder day and night” — meaning it’s their birthright to rule over all Daemons. Neither of them asked for this.
Premiere Date and Episode Count
Daemons of the Shadow Realm premiered on April 4, 2026, on Tokyo MX and other Japanese networks at 11:30 PM JST. New episodes drop every Saturday at 9:00 AM PT / 12:00 PM ET on Crunchyroll. A dubbed version is also available, with Ben Stegmair voicing Yuru and Molly Zhang voicing Asa.
The season is confirmed for 24 episodes across two consecutive cours, with the final episode scheduled for approximately September 12, 2026.

Where the Story Is Right Now
As of Episode 10 (June 6, 2026), Yuru, a character named Dera, and their group have uncovered terrifying secrets inside something called the “Lost House” of the Tadera clan. The episode ends on a major cliffhanger: two mysterious figures — Long-Arm and Long-Leg — appear and interrupt the group. Episode 11 drops June 13 and is expected to be one of the season’s most intense episodes yet.
The series has been building steadily. The early episodes establish the rural setting and the bond between the twins before pulling that world away. Mid-season has been focused on Yuru navigating the Daemon world without Asa, while each episode adds new pieces to the larger picture.
The Production Team
- Director: Masahiro Ando (Sword of the Stranger)
- Studio: BONES Film
- Cast: Kensho Ono as Yuru, Yume Miyamoto as Asa, Yuichi Nakamura as Dera
BONES Film brought in several key staff members from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood specifically for this project. The visual similarities to FMA are noticeable — character expressions, action framing, and the way the show handles weight and consequence in its dramatic moments.
How It Compares to FMA
The easy comparison is obvious, and BONES isn’t shying away from it in their marketing. But Daemons of the Shadow Realm earns its own identity fairly quickly. The setting is more rural and rooted in Japanese folklore than FMA’s steampunk European aesthetic. The Daemon system is its own thing — not alchemy. And the twin protagonist structure creates a different kind of emotional dynamic than Ed and Al’s relationship.
It’s a darker, slower burn in the early episodes. Once the separation happens and the world opens up, it finds its own rhythm.
