The Ghost in the Shell anime 2026 has been in production for a while, and now the premiere date is locked. Science SARU — the studio behind Dandadan, Devilman Crybaby, and Inu-Oh — is bringing a brand-new adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s original manga to screens worldwide on July 7, 2026.
This isn’t a sequel or a continuation. It’s a full retelling, and the creative choices being made here set it apart from every previous version of the franchise.

What Makes This Version Different
Ghost in the Shell has been adapted several times — the landmark 1995 film directed by Mamoru Oshii, the acclaimed Stand Alone Complex TV series (2002–2005), the 2017 live-action film with Scarlett Johansson, and various other entries. Each one has had a distinct visual identity.
Science SARU’s version is the first adaptation to deliberately match the visual style of Shirow’s original manga — something closer to the source material’s energetic, slightly scruffier designs rather than Production I.G.’s hyper-detailed photorealistic aesthetic. The trailer confirms this immediately. It’s a manga-inspired look, which makes it feel like a different conversation with the source material rather than a retread of prior adaptations.
The Story
The series is set in 2029 in a near-future Japan where massive global information networks exist alongside continued political divisions and nation-states. Major Motoko Kusanagi — a full-body cyborg — leads an elite government anti-crime unit. She and her partner Batou envision a specialized task force capable of responding to cyber threats before they escalate into crises.
The central villain is the Puppet Master — an elite hacker, one of the most iconic antagonists in the franchise’s history. As Section 9 investigates cybercrime and international conspiracies, they close in on this mysterious figure whose capabilities may exceed their own.
The series also brings back the Tachikoma — the spider-like AI tanks that became fan favorites in Stand Alone Complex — which means there’s a balance between serious cyberpunk themes and the moments of levity the Tachikoma naturally generate.
The Production Staff
- Director: Mokochan (Touma Kimura)
- Scripts: EnJoe Toh
- Character Design: Shûhei Handa
- Art Director: Emi Katanosaka
- Music: Taisei Iwasaki, Ryō KONISHI, Yuki Kanesaka
- Title Logo Design: Hajime Sorayama (yes, that Sorayama)
The music team alone is worth noting. Taisei Iwasaki handled scores for Dungeon Meshi and Vinland Saga Season 2. The sound design on this series is likely to be exceptional.

Who Is This For?
Longtime Ghost in the Shell fans who feel the franchise has been iterated enough to feel familiar will find this version has something genuinely new to offer in its visual approach and its closeness to Shirow’s original text. New viewers who’ve heard of Ghost in the Shell but never found an entry point have one now — it’s a full retelling, not a sequel, so no prior knowledge required.
For fans of Science SARU specifically, this is their biggest project since Dandadan and arguably their most culturally significant. The studio’s animation style — expressive, kinetic, with strong character acting — suits cyberpunk action well.
